In this episode of Driven By, Sam Coates sits down with Dr. Sally Gates Parish — the accidental superintendent behind University Schools at the University of Memphis. Her schools are ranked in the top three in the state. She has 1,300 kids enrolled and 1,500 more on the waiting list. And she never applied for the job.

Sally grew up country poor in a log cabin in middle Tennessee — well water, single parent home, first-generation college graduate who waited tables to pay her way through school. She chaired a committee at the University of Memphis, delivered 51 recommendations, and the president told her she was now in charge of making them happen.
